Winter Olympic Facts and Trivia
Although most people would prefer the warmer seasons, for some countries, the snow-filled months are the perfect time to come out and play. There are indoor sports such as speed and figure skating, curling, and hockey. However, most of the events are held outdoors.
Over the years, there have been many variations of sporting activities, such as military patrol, which were eventually discontinued. Today, the three main categories at the Winter Olympic Sports are Ice, Nordic events, and Alpine, Skiing and Snowboarding.
Here are some facts and trivia of the events that are under the first classification:
- Bobsled races only started having women's event in 2002.
- Luge is considered the fastest sport you can play on ice. Competitors race down feet first only a few inches away from the frozen ground. There are three events: Men's and women's singles and mixed doubles.
- Skeleton is the more extreme counter-part of luge, where competitors ride a sled down a track head first and steer by movements of the body. This event was on hiatus from 1948 to 2002.
- Hockey is a team sport played on ice. Players need a certain level of balance, skill, speed and calculation. The women's division for this game started in 1998.
- Figure skating have men's and ladies' singles, pairs, and Ice Dancing, which is doing ballroom on ice.
- Speed skating events are inside a 400-metre oval of ice. The races are time trials with the skaters starting off as pairs; they perform one inner then one out curve during each lap.
